How To Troubleshoot Random Instruments Shutdown

Step 1: Check the instrument for windows updates o In the Start Menu Open ‘Control Panel’ o Got to ‘Programs and Features’ o On the left-hand side, click “view installed updates” o Under ‘Windows Updates’, review the list of programs for updates occurring on the same day as the instrument shutdown If a program has been updated, it might be related to the shutdown. Note the program that was updated and reach out to your IT team to modify GPOs to comply with Illumina’s recommendations (disable Windows Updates) If none of the programs have been updated recently, check the antivirus settings Step 2: Check Antivirus Status o Open Control Panel o Go to Programs and Features o Take a screen shot of antivirus programs, unfamiliar on the list o If antivirus is present, confirm with your IT team that the antivirus software only scans and updates manually Step 3: Verify Windows Defender o In the Windows search bar type “Windows Defender” and select it. o A prompt appears indicating "this app is turned off by a group policy” o If not, consult with your IT team to disable Windows Defender Step 4: Generate and Check GPO report o Open the Start Menu and search for “Windows PowerShell” and select it. o Once opened, type the following : “gpresult” “space”/r “space” /v “space” “space” c:\Illumina\Report.txt”. This will output a GPO report to the C:\Illumina folder. o Navigate to the C:\Illumina folder and Select the “Report.txt” file o Under the “USER SETTINGS” section, note the “Last Time Group Policy was applied” timestamp. o If the timestamp is near the time that the instrument shut down, consult with your IT team regarding the GPO that was recently applied. Step 5: Power Supply report (only 1 instrument per power source) o If the instrument is plugged into an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS), confirm that there is only one instrument per power supply. o This can be done by checking the load on the display screen whereas all bars should not be lit or by visually checking the number of instruments plugged in the back of the UPS. Step 6: Check Windows event logs 1. Open Start menu and search for “This PC” 2. Right click This PC and select Manage 3. In left hand panel select the arrow next to Event Viewer 4. Then select Windows logs arrow 5. Then click on application 6. This will load a list of errors, information and warnings. 7. On the left-hand panel, save this event log by clicking on "Application" so that it is highlighted. Then on the right-hand panel, Select “Save all events as” and save as an event file (.evtx). Select any file location, however, the desktop is most easily accessible. 8. Then repeat the previous steps for Security and System. On the left-hand side under Windows Logs, Select Security. 9. On the left-hand panel, save this event log by clicking on "Security" so that it is highlighted. Then on the right-hand panel, Select “Save all events as” and save as an event file (.evtx). Select the same file location as chose for the Application logs 10. On the left-hand side under Windows Logs, Select System. 11. On the left-hand panel, save this event log by clicking on "System" so that it is highlighted. Then on the right-hand panel, Select “Save all events as” and save as an event file (.evtx). Select the same file location as chose for the Application and Security logs 12. On the left hand panel, at the same level as the Windows log, select the arrow next to "Applications and Services" logs. After the list expands, select Hardware Events. There likely are not any records in this file, but if there are, save this log as well. 13. Once all event logs are saved, consult with your IT team for abnormalities within the logs.
